Podiatry Board of Australia (Ahpra) review of the Criminal history registration standard

Consultation is an important part of the Podiatry Board of Australia (Ahpra)’s engagement with members of the podiatry profession, members of the public and other stakeholders. The feedback provided via consultation is greatly valued, and informs the Board’s development of important documents.

In late 2023, the Board consulted widely on a range of reforms in its work to improve public safety in health regulation. This consultation included a series of questions about the current version of the criminal history standard.

After consideration of all feedback received, a draft registration standard and new supporting materials.

The major changes to the criminal history standard are:

  • Making it clear a practitioner cannot have a criminal history incompatible with registration.
  • More information on the purpose and the requirements of the criminal history registration standard and providing examples of how the standard works.
  • Separating the consideration of nature and gravity, or seriousness, of a criminal offence. This change reflects feedback received that while the nature of some offences may be seen as ‘minor’ within the criminal justice system, these offences have a greater impact when considered in the context of regulated health practice.
  • Adding a new consideration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander experiences of inequity and racism, and the disproportionate impact these experiences may have on an individual’s criminal history.

The Board would now like to hear from podiatric professionals on how it has responded to feedback, the draft changes made to the criminal history standard, and the other material developed to explain how the standard is applied.

There are specific questions about the draft changes and material along with an opportunity for general comment. You can access the consultation materials on the current consultations webpage.

Feedback can be provided using an online form. Alternatively, you can provide feedback using the submission template (120 KB, DOCX) and email it through to AhpraConsultation@ahpra.gov.au.

The questions in the online form and submissions template are the same and based on the questions listed on page 10 of the consultation paper.

Consultation opens on 4 June 2024 and closes COB 30 July 2024.
