NDIS update for podiatrists: new changes

In light of the new NDIS Amendment Bill, the APodA recently met with the NDIS Technical Advice and Practice Improvement Branch to explore how best to support podiatrists moving forward in confidently navigating the NDIS scheme.

This will be an ongoing process, but we envision 2025 will bring about opportunity for our members.

A reminder/update on the release of the NDIS Amendment Bill changes came into effect on 3 October 2024.

As part of the NDIS Amendment Bill, here are a selection of relevant updates:

  • Definition of NDIS Supports: To remain eligible for NDIS funding, podiatry services must demonstrate a clear connection to a participant’s NDIS-approved impairments. Services considered part of mainstream healthcare. Following this shift in definition, it is important to ensure podiatry services align with participants' specific disability-related needs to secure ongoing support through the NDIS.
  • Flexible Budget Model: The NDIS is introducing a more adaptable funding model, providing participants with greater flexibility in managing their supports. Podiatrists will be required to ensure their services fit within the "reasonable and necessary" categories as defined by the NDIS.
  • Revised Access and Planning Pathways: Updates to participant pathways and reassessment processes may influence how podiatry services are accessed. Services identified as mainstream healthcare could be reclassified. It remains crucial to ensure that podiatry services are clearly linked to participants' disability needs to stay within the NDIS funding framework.

These changes are part of a broader reform effort aimed at refining NDIS support criteria and enhancing service delivery within the disability sector.

The APodA will continue to advocate for podiatrists and collaborate with AHPA to ensure quality care for participants as this Bill is rolled out.
