APodA Board Position on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice to Parliament
The Australian Podiatry Association’s Board of Directors (the Board) supports the recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the Constitution through the proposed establishment of an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice to Parliament.
We believe that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander representation and participation in decision-making processes are crucial in Closing the Gap across its five interconnected dimensions. We also believe that accountability by governments at all levels is essential in working towards ongoing reconciliation and redressing a suite of disparities, such as social and cultural determinants of health. Likewise, the Board is concerned by distinct disparities in health outcomes experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people - including the rates of diabetes, chronic diseases, and foot-related complications; all of which lead to severe health consequences if not properly addressed.
In supporting an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice to Parliament, the Board reinforces its commitment to improving the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
Whilst this is the Board’s position on the Voice to Parliament, we encourage everyone to seek the information they need to form their own views on the referendum.
