Working in Australia

Working in Australia

Are you an overseas trained podiatrist interested in working in Australia? Here’s a guide to help navigate the process of immigration and recognition of your podiatry qualifications by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra).

Step 1: Determine Eligibility

Before starting the process, ensure you meet the eligibility criteria set by Ahpra for overseas trained podiatrists. This may include having completed a recognised podiatry qualification in your home country and meeting English language proficiency requirements.

Step 2: Apply to Ahpra

Complete and submit an application to Ahpra for assessment of your qualifications. You may need to provide detailed documentation, including transcripts, proof of identity, and evidence of your podiatry training and experience.

Step 3: Skills Assessment and Qualifications

Ahpra will assess your qualifications against the Australian standards to determine if they are equivalent to Australian qualifications. This assessment may involve a thorough review of your academic transcripts, clinical experience and professional credentials.

Step 4: English Language Proficiency

Demonstrate English language proficiency by providing evidence of passing an approved English language test. Read the Podiatry Board of Australia’s English language skills registration standard here.

Step 5: Podiatry Board Approval and Registration

Once Ahpra determines that your qualifications meet the required standards, your application is referred to the Podiatry Board of Australia for final approval. Once approved by the Podiatry Board of Australia you will be eligible to apply for registration as a podiatrist in Australia. Registration allows you to legally practice podiatry in all states/territories of Australia.

Step 6: Immigration and Visa

In parallel with the Ahpra registration process, you will need to obtain an appropriate visa to live and work in Australia. Consider consulting with an immigration agent or lawyer specialising in healthcare professionals to explore visa options tailored to your circumstances. For further information on immigration and visa go to the Australian Government Department of Home Affairs website.

Step 7: Job Search

Utilise the Australian Podiatry Association’s (APodA) classifieds to search and apply for podiatry job opportunities across Australia. The APodA’s classifieds provide a valuable resource for finding employment within the podiatry profession.

Step 8: Join the APodA as a Member

Consider joining the APodA as a member to access professional development opportunities, clinical and professional resources, discounted PI & PL insurance and ongoing support.

Please note that the process may vary depending on individual circumstances and changes in regulatory requirements. For detailed information and guidance specific to your situation, we recommend visiting the Ahpra website or contacting their customer service team.

We welcome overseas trained podiatrists to Australia and encourage you to reach out if you have any questions or need assistance.
