Join us for this 40-minute presentation and 10-minute Q&A session on the topic of 'The role of multimodal Pain Management for Podiatrists with and without an endorsement for scheduled medicines'.

Opioids have an ever-decreasing role in the pharmacological management of acute pain. Codeine, once the primary drug for managing moderate to severe acute pain states is being replaced. There are several strategies podiatrists can use to manage acute pain which are safer and more effective with fewer side effects.

The Presenter

Andrew van Essen

After a period at Flinders Medical Centre, Andrew started his surgical training gaining his Fellowship of the Australasian College of Podiatric Surgeons and endorsement for scheduled medicines in South Australia in 1995. He also holds Fellowships with the Australian Sport Medicine Federation and the Academy of Minimally Invasive Foot and Ankle Surgery (USA). In 2016 he was awarded a Fellowship at the Faculty of Podiatric Medicine at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (Glasgow).

He has previously helped develop the curriculum and lectured in postgraduate courses, including surgery, paediatrics, advanced biomechanics, advanced podiatric medicine, and sports medicine. He has lectured extensively in Japan since 1995 and continues to do so annually. Other overseas work includes developing a program for the early intervention and treatment of clubfoot in Vietnam.

Other professional activities have included State and National President of the Australian Podiatry Association, Chairperson of the Podiatrist’s Registration Board of South Australia, Trustee of the Australian Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine, Chairman of the Australian Podiatry Education and Research Foundation, council member of the Australasian College of Podiatric Surgeons and numerous other professional committees and boards.

Andrew is currently consulting and operating in South Australia and the Northern Territory, a Clinical Supervisor at the University of South Australia, and has an adjunct position at Queensland University of Technology.
