The theme for May 2025 will be 'Advanced Wound Care Strategies for Podiatrists: Navigating the Chronic Wounds Consumables Scheme and Enhancing Lower Limb Management.'

This comprehensive series of webinars is designed specifically for podiatrists to enhance their expertise in wound care management, focusing on the latest evidence-based practices, advanced technologies, and clinical strategies. Participants will gain practical insights into assessing, treating, and preventing lower limb wounds, particularly in patients with diabetes.

Learning Objectives for this theme:

  1. Analyse the latest evidence-based approaches to effectively assess, treat, and prevent diabetic foot ulcers.
  2. Gain in-depth knowledge of the Chronic Wounds Consumables Scheme, including eligibility criteria, product selection, and reimbursement processes.

Overview
This webinar is designed to guide podiatrists through the escalation pathway for managing ischaemic and infected diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs). Attendees will learn to recognise early warning signs, implement timely interventions, and coordinate multidisciplinary care to prevent complications and improve patient outcomes. The session will cover vascular assessments, antimicrobial strategies, and when to refer for specialist intervention.

Learning outcomes

  1. List the stages of the escalation pathway for managing an ischaemic/infected DFU.

  2. Discuss the consequences of delayed intervention on patient outcomes.

  3. Assess potential barriers to timely escalation and propose solutions.

The Presenter

Saja Qasem

Saja Qasem is a Podiatrist and the current Head of Department for Podiatry and the High Risk Foot Service at Royal North Shore and Ryde Hospitals. With experience as a Clinical Tutor and Casual Lecturer at Western Sydney University, Saja has a strong commitment to delivering and advancing high-acuity podiatric care across both admitted and non-admitted settings. She is deeply engaged in service improvement and innovation and is undertaking a Master of Digital Health and Data Science. Her work spans across research, education, operational management and service redesign.

The Moderator

Joseph Frenkel
B. Pod. | M. Sc. | Grad. Dip. Derm.

Joseph is a Podiatrist and Academic with a decade of study and over 20 years of clinical experience. His primary work is in Podiatric Dermatology and is currently the consulting Podiatrist at the Skin Health Institute, as well as in his private practice Heel Me Podiatry. Joseph also holds academic positions at several Universities and both in Australia and internationally, is a reviewer for medical journals and regularly presents locally and abroad.

He also founded and actively runs the Podiatric Dermatology Interest Group on Facebook which now has close to 4,500 members worldwide.
