Blister Prevention University

CPD Activity outline / summary

This course outlines how the popular friction blister causation paradigm (heat, moisture and friction) is oversimplified and indeed, misunderstood. It describes the counterintuitive role of friction, including its contradictory double meaning (rubbing vs resistance to rubbing) and fully explains the more accurate “repetitive shear deformation” pathomechanics of blister formation. Understanding this directly informs the choice of prevention and treatment modalities. Rebecca and Doug present the academic evidence behind individual blister prevention strategies and outline its mechanism of action and pros and cons. The relevant factors for blisters at different anatomical locations are discussed, as well as the principles of meaningful blister treatment, not simply first aid.

CPD Activity learning outcomes

  1. Recognise the prevalence of friction blisters of the feet, including in comparison to other injuries in sport.
  2. Recognise the mainstream understanding of blister causation is over-simplified.
  3. Define the pathomechanics and pathophysiology of friction blister formation in the feet.
  4. Understand the 7 potential mechanisms of action of blister prevention strategies.
  5. Consider the pros and cons of over 21 blister prevention strategies.
  6. Use this knowledge to identify preventive opportunities for blisters at 16 anatomical locations.
  7. Understand the principles of blister treatment based on the integrity of the blister roof.
  8. Identify who needs help with blisters, understand the predictability of blisters and establish ways to start a blister conversation with patients.
  9. Write a blister plan for a patient who is troubled with blisters or is preparing for an event that puts them at elevated risk of suffering blisters.

Further Information

Research shows foot blisters are not just the most common FOOT injury in sport, but are THE most common injury in sport.

Both the lay and academic literature is awash with erroneous statements and inconsistencies. A big part of the problem is the contradictory double meaning of friction (rubbing versus the force that resists rubbing). The result is we misunderstand the cause of blisters and therefore approach prevention and treatment from the wrong angle. There is much room for improvement in the way we manage foot blisters. Their prevalence in the athletic and active community, but the community at large, makes this topic a priority for the podiatry profession.

Friction blisters of the feet are a legitimate pathology and podiatrists are legitimately the most appropriate people to be dealing with this injury.
