eCourse - APodA Plantar Pressure Analysis
Plantar pressure data tells you what is happening in the feet with every step your patient takes. That is the systems interacting to provide function and the resultant weight-bearing trajectory through each foot.
A musculoskeletal examination should tell you why the foot dysfunction seen in the plantar pressure analysis is occurring. This includes analysis of the pathway or trajectory of body weight through the legs and feet into the ground, how the body compensates and any secondary adaptations that have occurred through dysfunction.
Together, analysis of clinical plantar pressure and your physical musculoskeletal examination provide you with a clear direction for diagnosis and treatment of gait dysfunction.
eCourse Learning Outcomes
Module 1 Biomechanical Principles of Force (15 mins)
The learner understands the role of force direction and placement through the body, how the body manages these forces and their effect on foot function
Module 2 An overview of Plantar Pressure Systems (25 mins)
The learner has a basic understanding of the different types of plantar pressure systems and the pros and cons of pressure mats, treadmills, and in-shoe systems used in clinical practice.
Module 3 Integrating Plantar Pressure into your Practice (25 mins)
The learner will understand the benefits to the clinical practice of using pressure analysis and how to integrate and set up plantar pressure equipment in clinical practice to make the best use of the pressure analysis equipment.
Module 4 Plantar Pressure Data Acquisition (20 mins)
The learner will receive an overview of recording protocols and preparation of data for analysis and will understand the role of plantar pressure analysis within musculoskeletal examination, how the musculoskeletal examination and plantar pressure work together to give a clear understanding of the dysfunction or pressure areas and their characteristics in high-risk feet.
Module 5 Plantar Pressure Data Analysis (30 mins)
The learner will understand the common plantar pressure software analysis tools used to assess the trajectory and timing of centre of pressure and recognize the areas of loading displayed in the Force Vs Time graphs using several examples of pressure analysis to explain the signific analysis features that are key to developing a diagnostic hypothesis with confidence.
Module 6 Using Plantar to predict Outcomes (35 mins)
The learner will understand the use of plantar pressure technology to test a diagnostic hypothesis and see in real-time if the desired outcome is achieved, of either changing function or offloading key pressure sites without onloading other potential pressure areas, by comparing the changes made to the plantar pressure data through commonly used podiatric interventions such as taping and padding and thereby predicting the outcome of a proposed treatment strategy.
Module 7 The future of Plantar Pressure (20 mins)
The learner will understand the potential for clinical plantar pressure analysis to be a key component of evaluating the impact of force loading, trajectory, and timing on both static and dynamic foot function including the development of plantar pressure technology in real-world environments to assess the effect on the foot, whether it’s in the sports field, running in the hills or recording the pressures under a high-risk foot during a day in the patient’s life.

About the Presenter
Paul Graham
B.App.Sc.(Podiatry) F.A.A.P.S.M.
Current member of the Australian Pain Society
For over 34 years Paul has been in private practice as a practice owner, clinician and employer. With a special interest in musculoskeletal foot and lower limb conditions, his focus has always been on comprehensive, evidence-based examination and diagnosis of the underlying causes of presenting symptoms, to achieve the best possible outcome for each patient.
Paul has used plantar pressure analysis in his clinical practice for the diagnosis and treatment of gait and foot dysfunction since 1998. It has become an integral part of his examination process, providing objective data on the trajectory, timing and amount of pressure during the gait cycle. Paul has found significant improvement in the clinical outcomes of his patients using clinical plantar pressure analysis to predict treatment outcomes and inform the orthotic prescription and review process. It enables him to chart a patient’s progress and improvement effectively and efficiently by taking a recording at each visit and comparing it to previous visits.
As a clinical supervisor for university students studying podiatry Paul saw the need for a greater understanding of the clinical potential for plantar pressure analysis. As a result, he created Step Force Training to provide training, seminars and workshop for clinicians, both online and as a live presenter, to help practitioners understand how to use plantar pressure technology to help diagnose and treat foot dysfunction.
Paul now provides regular training and consultancy to practitioners worldwide including Canada, the U.K., Europe, India, South Africa and the U.S.A. as well as providing clinical plantar pressure workshops at the University of Western Sydney, Latrobe University and the University of Newcastle.
