APodA + SEPA Hosts | Webinar - The Role of the First Metatarsophalangeal Joint and Plantar Fascia in Locomotion

A

In a pre-recorded presentation, Dr. Lauren Welte will highlight the role of the first metatarsophalangeal joint and plantar fascia in locomotion, using high-speed x-ray to challenge the 70-year-old assumptions of the windlass mechanism. She will explore the implications for foot function and our understanding of how we move.

Joining us to moderate the Q&A session will be Dr Jayishni Maharaj ...

Presenter: Dr Lauren Welte

Dr. Lauren Welte is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. She completed her PhD in Mechanical Engineering in September 2020, which focused on foot and arch function during locomotion. She has expertise in high-speed biplanar x-ray and computed tomography (CT), such that she can measure individual foot bone motion during dynamic movements. She has recently published two studies that redefine conceptual models of the foot, contributing to our understanding of healthy foot function. Her research has applications in many fields, such as robotic and footwear design, surgical treatments, and podiatry.

Moderator: Dr Jayishni Maharaj

Dr Jayishni Maharaj is a Podiatrist and a Research Fellow at Griffith University, in the School of Allied Health Sciences. Jayishni’s research is at the intersection of biomechanics, rehabilitative and computer sciences, focusing on using personalised musculoskeletal lower limb and foot models to explore mechanisms of injury and predict outcomes of rehabilitation and surgery. Jayishni received an NHMRC postgraduate scholarship to complete her PhD in the areas of Biomechanics and Motor Control and was awarded a fellowship to attend Stanford University to refine her skills in musculoskeletal modelling.
