APodA Hosts | Live & Local Rockhampton | 1 & ½ Day Podiatry Seminar.

In this unprecedented Rockhampton local event, the APodA and CQU are collaborating to bring education and support to you to in this, the last of the Live & Local events, face to face for 2023.

Across the Friday and Saturday, you will have a chance to upskill and network with your Queensland peers. We invite you to travel in for this extensive CPD offering in sunny Rockhampton, with over 10 hours of content, in a mix of both didactic and practical workshops. You will be led by internationally renowned Podiatric leaders; Dr Benjamin Peterson and Dr Peta Tehan in your local hometown.

This extensive one-and-a-half-day format will cover three curriculum streams:

You will cover a multitude of content; inclusive of the updated IWGDF vascular guidelines and the triage and management of patients requiring tertiary assistance. Musculoskeletal & Sports Session & Workshop | Saturday Morning
Saturday morning, join Dr Benjamin Peterson as he leads you through his area of expertise with a mix of both didactic and hands-on learning. Benjamin’s orthopaedic lower limb assessment workshop will fill you with confidence in the assessment of those areas that we often need a bit more practice (above the ankle). Learn about the risks of running related injuries and best practice guidelines for a series of musculoskeletal pathologies. Be joined by a series of multidisciplinary UQ special guest lecturers who will also bring their knowledge to the morning.

Sally Purvis
Children & Diabetes – what do we; and don’t we know? | Saturday Afternoon
Sally Purvis: Our tertiary, high-risk sectors are specifically geared up for the care of our adult population, and at times, predominately for those suffering the complications of Type II diabetes. As a podiatrist this is an area that we feel confident that we are providing excellent care, and we have evidenced based guidelines to guide and assist our clinical reasoning. But what do we do when a young person presents with Type I diabetes? Let talk about this patient population with Sally.

Enhancing our care in light of sensory processing differences | Saturday Afternoon

Join Hannah in this dynamic practical session as she shares her knowledge and passion for working with children who have neurodevelopmental and sensory processing differences. Learn how we can make the world a less overwhelming place for our clients and embrace the unique relationships you will make when working with this population of patients.

The Presenters:


Dr Peta Tehan

Dr Tehan is a lecturer in the Master of Wound Care at Monash University and a Senior Podiatrist at the John Hunter Hospital High Risk Foot Clinic.
Dr Tehan has a passion for reducing the inequities in outcomes seen in diabetes-related foot disease and chronic limb threatening ischemia, particularly in rural areas. Dr Tehan has published extensively in vascular assessment and wound care, and is currently leading research projects in new technologies to identify peripheral artery disease early, in order to improve timely management. 


Dr Benjamin Peterson

Bachelor of Podiatry, Bachelor of Health Science (Honours), Doctor of Philosophy Senior Lecturer | Head of Course Podiatry School of Health, Medical and Applied Sciences CQU
Dr Benjamin Peterson is a Senior Lecturer in Podiatry at CQUniversity and holds the qualifications B Podiatry, B Health Science (Hons), and PhD (Podiatry). Benjamin has a research and clinical focus on running-related injury, however he is also actively researching across a range of areas including physical activity promotion, connective tissue disorders, chronic disease management, vascular disease, low back pain, occupational therapy, and sports science. Benjamin's research has been published in high-quality journals such as Sports Medicine - Open, Journal of Sports Sciences, and Diabetic Medicine, and has been presented at key conferences, including the Australian Podiatry Conference and the Sports Medicine Australia Conference.


Sally Purvis

B.Pod, GradC Diabetes Ed. Podiatry Lecturer | School of Health, Medical and Applied Sciences, CQU
Following graduation from Charles Sturt University in 2013, Sally has gone on to work in varied roles within the community, public and private sector across regional Victoria. In early 2021, she embarked on a large interstate move to sunny Central Queensland where she enjoyed the professional challenges of the public high-risk podiatry space. Professionally, she has a keen interest in high-risk feet and podopaediatrics, tailoring her professional development towards both. Sally has recently embarked on career path divergence into the academic world where she now works as a lecturer and early career academic at Central Queensland University lecturing in Paediatrics in Podiatry Practice. When not working, Sally is often spending her time at the beach with her two young children, husband, and adventurous kelpie dog


Hannah Doherty

Hannah is the Play Learn Grow Therapy Director and Occupational Therapist. Hannah graduated from Central Queensland University in 2018 with a Bachelor of Occupational Therapy (Honours) First Class.
Hannah is the Play Learn Grow Therapy Director and Occupational Therapist. Hannah graduated from Central Queensland University in 2018 with a Bachelor of Occupational Therapy (Honours) First Class. Hannah has worked across Central Queensland in Community, Hospital and Paediatric settings. Hannah has a passion for working with children and their families to meet their individual goals. Hannah has experience supporting children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Global Developmental Delay, Intellectual Impairment, learning challenges, and children who have experienced trauma.

Hannah is a Certified Facilitator of LEGO® Based Therapy and is looking forward to running small groups within schools in Rockhampton and surrounding areas. Hannah is experienced in sensory integration, handwriting, emotional regulation, social skills, play skills, and self-care skills. Hannah has also completed further training, including

  • The Greenspan Floortime Approach (DIR Floortime)

  • New Born Behavioural Observation (NBO)

On the weekends Hannah enjoys spending time with her friends and family, including her fiancé Riley and their dog Leo. Hannah's favorite things to do include taking photos, reading books, going for a swim, and drinking lots of coffee. Hannah is motivated to meet the best possible outcomes for her clients and their families.


Dr Sean Ledger

I am Head of Course for Physiotherapy and Senior Lecturer in Cardiorespiratory Physiotherapy, and an early career researcher specialising in cystic fibrosis, lung function, and exercise in children with cardiorespiratory disease.
I have over 19 years of combined clinical experience and teaching on undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in cardiorespiratory physiotherapy, paediatrics, sports medicine and rehabilitation and exercise science. I hold a BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy from Trinity College Dublin, a MSc Advanced Cardiorespiratory Physiotherapy from University College London and a PhD in Paediatric Cardiorespiratory Physiotherapy from University College London. My doctoral research at UCL focused on the longitudinal effects of individually supervised exercise on lung function, exercise capacity and quality of life in children with cystic fibrosis and I have presented my research at international respiratory and physiotherapy conferences.

Prior to joining CQUniversity I was the Programme Director for Rehabilitation and Exercise Science and a Lecturer in Cardiorespiratory Physiotherapy at Keele University, UK. I spent 7 years at Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital as a Senior Cardiorespiratory Physiotherapist prior to joining Keele University.


Rhys Pierce

Rhys Pierce is a La Trobe University graduate and well-reputed podiatrist based in the South East of Melbourne. Practicing since 2017, Rhys developed a curiosity for the mechanics of the lower limb and associated sporting injuries.
After working for several years in the private practice sector, Rhys ultimately established a busy podiatry clinic within a multidisciplinary facility. He has since employed multiple podiatrists and enjoys providing a pathway for growth within the rehabilitation and injury management space. When the position became available for Production Manager at Footwork, Rhys saw this as both a challenge and opportunity to better his orthotic knowledge and play a role in the efficacy of orthotic therapy. Since his employment with Footwork, Rhys has transitioned from Production Manager to now General Manager, with eyes over the entire Footwork architecture. His experience as a practitioner and clinical director, turned senior manager in Orthotic Manufacturing is extremely unique and provides the foundation for an invaluable wealth of knowledge.
